Paige Estes Memorial Fun Run & Walk
This is a chance for the entire Wichita community to come out and get involved in this relatively short running event for a good cause. No stress, no competition here... just a chance to enjoy a nice leisurely stroll along the gorgeous Arkansas River through the heart of WIchita.
The Paige Estes Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the objective of making positive changes in both the Wichita and Bucklin, Kansas areas. Proceeds from the Paige Estes Memorial Fun Run & Walk will go to the Via Christi Burn Center.

Prairie Fire’s Paige Estes Memorial Run to raise funds for Burn Center
The 4th Annual Prairie Fire Marathon, for which Via Christi Health is the presenting sponsor, offers people of all ages and fitness levels the chance to get moving.
This year, the Oct. 12th-13th event also will provide everyone a chance to lend support to burn survivors—by participating in the fun run/walk and volunteering at events that also include a Saturday health expo at Century II; full, half and youth marathons; and the Mayor's 5K.
This year, the 1.2-mile fun run is being sponsored by the Paige Estes Memorial Foundation, with the stipulation that the net proceeds from the no-stress, no competition event go to benefit patients at the Via Christi Burn Center.
"Paige was such a positive person and this is such a positive and uplifting event — she absolutely would love it," said Jared Estes. In March 2005, Estes was severely burned and Paige, his high school sweetheart and wife of six months, killed when their car was struck by a drunk driver.
Estes, who had started running shortly before the accident, ran his first marathon in 2010 at the inaugural Prairie Fire event. He ran it with Mike Reynolds, the occupational therapist who worked with him during his treatment and recovery at the Via Christi Burn Center.
“When I could barely stand, Mike told me that I’d be running a marathon in no time,” said Estes. “I won’t get to participate in this year’s full marathon because it conflicts with the fun run, but this is way more important to me.”
Cost for the Paige Estes Memorial Fun Run/Walk, which starts at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13th, is $15.
"You'll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you're helping Jared help other patients needing wound and burn care," said Bob Hanson, president of the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the event organizer.
Hanson, who anticipates needing 800 or more volunteers to help out before, during or immediately following the event, will donate $10 to for each shift worked by a volunteer affiliated with one the following 2012 community partners: Via Christi Burn Center, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Shocker Fitness, Girls on the Run, and Lose the Training Wheels.
"We have a great need for volunteers and this gives people the chance to help out in more ways than one," said Hanson.
