The Cowley County softball team recently received recognition in the nationally publicized National Fastpitch Coaches Association Magazine.

National Fastpitch Coaches Association Magazine, December 2012, Volume 17, No.12.

On Sunday, October 14,13 members of the Cowley County Community College softball team volunteered to work at the Third Annual Prairie Fire Marathon in Wichita, Kansas. Cowley softball has now assisted in all three of the Prairie Fire Marathons.

This year, the marathon had aproximately 4,000 runners competing in three different races - 5k, half marathon, and full marathon. The team was stationed at the busiest water station on the course, mile 25, as all three races passed through the station, it was the only station on the course that provided water and Gatorade to all of the nearly 4,00 runners.

The team began the water station at 7:45 a.m. and finished at approximately 2:00 p.m. when the last runner passed through. Cowley softball received high praise from the runners and from the marathon administrators for the good work and how seriously the players took their job to provide temporary relief to the runners.

Head Coach Ed Hargrove said "our players were really impressed and motivated by the dedication of the runners and some of them even expressed a desire to train for and run a marathon themselves. We will again volunteer to work the Fourth Annual Prairie Fire Marathon next year."
